The Mayflower Compact

Does anyone remember the Mayflower...? The Mayflower was a ship that brought over the first settlers to America back in 1620. Why did they come to America...?

The Mayflower Compact explains very succinctly that they came to America by the grace of God for the Glory of God to advance the Christian faith...!

The Mayflower story is a very interesting one. In my research I discovered that approximately half of the 101 passengers of the Mayflower voyage were 'Separatists' (Christians who had split from the Anglican church) and the other half were 'strangers' who were allowed to make the trip because they were willing to pay their way to the new world and the trip needed additional financing.

I wonder if that was truly God's will to mix Christians and non christians in a business venture?...? -Could that be the reason that the Mayflower's sister ship was unseaworthy and everyone had to crowd aboard the Mayflower...? Could that be the reason for the horrible weather for much of the 65 day journey at sea...?

We will never know the answers to those questions this side of heaven, but the fact remains that the original intent of the Separatists was to live for the Glory of God and that's good enough for me.

How Sudden a Catastrophe May Overwhelm Us...

Daniel Webster is considered one of the greatest orators in American history. He was a famous attorney, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and then the U.S. Senate. He served as Secretary of State for three Presidents. Webster was also a fervent Christian.

If there is anything in my thoughts or style to commend, the credit is due to my parents for instilling in me an early love of the Scriptures. If we abide by the principles taught in the Bible, our country will go on prospering and to prosper; but if we and our posterity neglect its instructions and authority, no man can tell how sudden a catastrophe may overwhelm us and bury all our glory in profound obscurity. -Daniel Webster 1782-1852

Webster was born shortly after the War for independence. He was one of the first American generations to grow up in Freedom. Why have the words and sentiments of this Great American gone unheeded...?

We're going to see in this blog example after example of how this country's beginnings are steeped in a rich Christian heritage. Oh I hope and pray our Heavenly Father will raise up a generation like Webster's again.

A Brushfire for Freedom

In light of the recent presidential election, apparently I find myself in the minority on a number of issues. But I take heart in the words of one of this country's founding fathers, Samuel Adams.

"It does not take a majority to prevail, but rather an irate and tireless minority keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men." -Samuel Adams

I came across Adam's quote on a blog post link at One News Now. Click Here to read the original article.

Now, who was Samuel Adams...? He was a cousin to John Quincey Adams, our country's second president, and was one of the original signers of the Declaration of Independence. If you google 'Samuel Adams' you'll come up with many web listings, but if you google 'Samuel Adams + Christian Heritage' you'll get this link from the Christian Law Association. It gives a short biography about Adams and what a strong man of faith he was. The quote above referencing the 'tireless minority' was the inspiration for me to start this blog...!
